HNS REPORTS---NOVEMBER 29. 2009
ANTI-WAR PROTESTERS SENSE CHANGE IN ATTITUDE
The NatureCoast Coalition for Peace and Justice, conducted another of its antiwar demonstrations on Saturday, the first in almost six months, and discovered "new and different responses" from the passing cars and public, according to spokesman Brian Moore. One protester said more people seemed to be in opposition to the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and cited two drivers who reportedly stopped their cars on the side of the road, in front of the protestors, to lend their verbal support and encouragement.
Moore also reported several incidents of passersby verbally attacking President Obama and the protesters occurred, with one person yelling from his truck what Moore reported as "Kill Obama, kill the n______," and several others gesturing vulgarly with their middle fingers.
The mix of reactions occurred during the one and one-half hour demonstration, by nine peace group members, at the corner of U.S. Highway 19 and State Road 50, directly across the street from the Weeki Wachee Spring Park, on a cold Saturday morning, with temperatures in the 40's.
DEDICATION CEREMONY SET FOR NEW S. BROOKSVILLE FACILITY
A grand opening ceremony for the Hernando County Sheriff’s South Brooksville Community Office is on tap for Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. According to a sheriff's office media release, the building will be dedicated to the first African-American deputies hired by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office under former Sheriff Sim Lowman.
Former Deputy Willie James Brooks and the family members of former Deputy Lee Lawson are expected be in attendance at the ceremony. The office, which was intended to double as a community center for the area, is located at 601 Martin Luther King Blvd. in Brooksville. Sheriff's budget cuts have raised concerns about the new building's availability for the intended community center purposes.
